Betaseron
Betaseron is prescribed by doctors to treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis and to reduce the frequency of clinical exacerbations. The drug was approved by the FDA in July of 1993. Health care professionals were warned against prescribing the drug in April of 2005 due to its potential for hepatic toxicity.
Reports have surfaced regarding serious hepatic injury in patients who have used the drug, including autoimmune hepatitis and severe liver damage requiring transplant. Liver testing is now required every one, three, and six months after the drug is first introduced.
Clinical trials of the drug revealed further dangerous side effects. Suicidal tendencies, flu-like symptoms and skin reaction to the injection site of the drug are other cited potential sideffects to the use of Betaseron.
